A Moment in History
May 21, 2017 By Dave Wilson
At the Houston Community College (HCC) graduation ceremony on May 13, 2017 at 1:00pm, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee delivered an inspiring speech to the graduates. She explained to the students that graduation was an important moment in the history of each graduate’s life.
Expanding on her theme, “A Moment in History”, hopefully the same can be said of the HCC board meeting, Committee of the Whole (COTW), on May 18, 2017. At this meeting the board voted not to authorize the Chancellor to begin a feasibility study to pursue purchasing real estate outside the taxing district. The board voted not to renew a marketing contract with the Houston Texans for $2m over a period of 4 years. The administration did not provide data that supported the expenditure.
An open and frank discussion about our LVN program being put on “conditional” status was eye opening, embarrassing, and healthy. The college failed to respond to early warning signs. We now have a process in place to prevent this from happening in the future. We have allocated a tremendous amount of resources towards making our nursing programs the best in Texas.
The board discussed emphasizing Quality over Quantity.
The board discussed being the Best not the Biggest Community College in Texas.
At the meeting I saw board members focused on the taxpayers, not land deals.
At the meeting I saw board members focused on the students, not the vendors.
Changing the culture at HCC is not going to be easy or fast. But I hope when we look back on the May 18, 2017 COTW meeting, we will be able to say: That was “The Moment in History” when the culture at HCC started to change.
